Real-Time Ice Nuclei Measurements at Oliktok

Ice containing clouds constitute one of the largest sources of uncertainty in predicting the Earth’s climate. The uncertainty arises in part because of the lack of understanding of the complex processes including heterogeneous ice nucleation by ice nucleating particles (INP) governing the formation of these clouds. The present state of knowledge of the nature and abundance of INP at Arctic conditions is extremely poor, such that a clear link between aerosol, INP concentrations, multiple ice nucleation processes and growth to precipitation has not been established. In this project samples will be collected at OLI location, and their physiochemical and ice nucleating properties will be carried out. The goal of this work is to relate previously particulates sampled in ambient air to with soils sampled at an OLI site.
