Observations and Modeling of the Green Ocean Amazon: NPSD

Participation during GOAMAZON 2014 was in support of studies of the Aerosol Life Cycle, in particular the measurement of new particle formation and initial growth. Measurement were accomplished through deployment at the T3 measurement site of an aerosol size spectrometer (NPSD) acquiring data on a 5-minute time interval, developed and optimized for the detection of aerosol down to below 1 nm in diameter. Particle detection was achieved through the use of a condensation particle counter using diethylene glycol as the working fluid, extending the conventional size detection limit below 3 nm. Measured size distributions were inverted to obtain aerosol dynamics information, such as the nucleation rate and size-resolved particle growth rates. Those rates were then used to drive model development and publications in peer-reviewed journals. Planned operational periods: 2014-02-01 to 2014-03-31 and 2014-08-02 to 2014-10-17.
