Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is seeking a postdoctoral research staff member as part of the Clouds and Aerosols Research group. The candidate will assist in the diagnosis of cloud, precipitation, and radiation processes in observations and evaluation of their representation in climate models. The Clouds and Aerosol Research group is closely connected with the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Climate Research Facility, which provides exciting and novel ground-based remote sensing observations of clouds and related processes, and the Program for Climate Model Diagnosis and Intercomparison, a world leader in the diagnosis of climate models.
Possible research activities include analysis and diagnosis of cloud, precipitation, and radiation processes in ARM and satellite observations; diagnosis and evaluation of the cloud, precipitation, and radiation processes in the Community Atmosphere Model using simulations performed as part of Cloud-Associated Parameterization Testbed; or modification and improvement of cloud, precipitation and radiation processes in the Community Atmosphere Model. The selected candidate will report to the Climate/Carbon Science Group Leader.
Required skills include:
- Recent PhD in atmospheric science or closely related field
- Experience conducting research in atmospheric science or closely related field.
- Expertise in one or more of the following areas: cloud, precipitation, radiation and aerosol processes, climate model diagnosis and/or numerical modeling of climate.
- Demonstrated experience with large model and observational datasets, modern programming environments, and visualization techniques.
Desired skills include expertise in cumulus convection or marine boundary layer cloud, precipitation, and radiation processes; and expertise utilizing ground-based remote sensing observations such as those collected by the ARM Facility or similar programs worldwide.
