TRACER-Model Intercomparison Project Wants Your Model Results!

Published: 25 October 2024

Editor’s note: Jiwen Fan and Stephen Saleeby, who lead the TRacking Aerosol Convection interactions ExpeRiment-Model Intercomparison Project (TRACER-MIP), provided the following blog post.

A few months ago, we shared in an ARM blog post that we were planning to release a call for community participation in our MIP, which is based on observed cases from ARM’s 2021–2022 TRACER field campaign in the Houston, Texas, region. We are happy to announce that, after completing and publishing the latest TRACER-MIP roadmap document, we are now accepting submissions for model results.

The roadmap document details the protocols that need to be followed for producing model results, along with simulation summaries of two convective cases from TRACER.

Side-by-side plots show accumulated precipitation within the area from 94.2 to 96 degrees west longitude and 28.5 to 30.3 degrees north latitude.
Observed 18-hour accumulated precipitation (mm) is shown for the TRACER-MIP events starting at 7 a.m. local time in Houston, Texas, on June 17, 2022 (left) and August 7, 2022 (right), from Multi-Radar/Multi-Sensor (MRMS) gridded data. The black contour denotes 5 mm accumulation. Images are from Stephen Saleeby.

We have built a TRACER-MIP GitHub site for sharing the roadmap document as well as other documentation that we will post as we proceed, such as updates, analysis codes, and model and parameterization descriptions.

Please reach out to us—Jiwen Fan and Stephen Saleeby—if you want to participate so that you can receive further guidance from us about this MIP.  Also, if you need computation time support from DOE’s National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) to participate in this activity, please let us know.

We plan to show some preliminary results in the next Aerosol, Cloud, Precipitation, and Climate (ACPC) workshop, which is scheduled for May 2025. For teams that wish to have their model results included in a TRACER-MIP preliminary presentation at the ACPC workshop, we need to receive your data submissions by Saturday, February 1, 2025.

The final deadline for submitting your TRACER-MIP model results to us is Tuesday, July 1, 2025.

Please contact us if you have questions, and we encourage you to spread the word about this MIP activity and share this post with people who might be interested.

We look forward to talking with you and receiving your submissions!

Fan is from Argonne National Laboratory, and Saleeby is at Colorado State University.
