SAM

CLASIC - SAM Support

9 June 2007 - 30 June 2007

Lead Scientist: John DeVore

Observatory: SGP

SAM (Sun and Aureole Measurement) ground instruments were deployed to support the CLASIC and DOE/ASP’s CHAPS field programs. SAM solar disk radiance measurements overlaped the aerosol optical depth measurements of Cimel sun photometers, extending their OD range as well as provided precise measurements for thin to moderately thick clouds. SAM measured the small angle forward scattering aureole surrounding the sun. These latter measurements provided information on the size distributions of cloud particles through analysis of their forward scattering. SAM measurements provided column-integrated values, complementing in-situ, point measurements of aircraft probes and retrievals using lidars and radars.
