Aerosol Life Cycle: UV-APS and Nano-SMPS
10 June 2011 - 25 June 2011
Lead Scientist: Gannet Hallar
Observatory: OSC
Current estimates indicate that new particle formation globally account for a majority of Cloud Condensation Nuclei (Merikanto et al., 2009). Studies have shown that marine air provides unique mechanisms for nucleation. For example, new particle formation was observed under very low light levels at dawn at Mace Head (O'Dowd et al., 1998; O'Dowd et al., 2002). This study will look for cases of marine influenced air using the UV-APS to detect biological material found in sea salt aerosols. Simultaneously, the nano-SMPS will determine if new particle formation is more prevalent during these periods.Co-Investigators
