Chemical Markers of Aerosol Cloud Interactions (CMACI)

Further research is needed to understand the physicochemical properties of aerosols that can impact deep convection. In this project we intend to advance understanding of source contributions to organic aerosols from anthropogenic and biogenic emissions during TRACER, where aerosol-cloud interactions abound during the deep convective season. We plan to obtain new field samples of vertically and size-resolved organic aerosols through deployment of the Size and Time-resolved Aerosol Collector (STAC) onboard ARM’s tethered balloon system. These filter samples will be analyzed offline using two-dimensional gas chromatography with high-resolution mass spectrometry to identify chemical markers in aerosols that can participate in aqueous oxidation pathways during cloud processing, potentially invigorate deep convection, and get transported vertically between the boundary layer and the free troposphere.
