World’s premier ground-based observations facility advancing atmospheric research

Postdoctoral Researcher with National Center for Environmental Prediction

Published: 14 February 2014

The National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher to be a part of the climate process team, which seeks to rapidly move physical parameterizations from the academic community into the operational forecast system. This position is a collaboration between NCEP and several universities. The selected candidate will work at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Center for Weather and Climate Prediction on the University of Maryland campus.

As part of a close-knit team, this project focuses on using simplified higher order closure method to replace the existing boundary-layer turbulence, shallow convection, and cloud faction parameterization. This project will later implement a unified scale-aware description of convection suitable for global models. These new parameterizations will first be implemented in a single-column mode and will be coupled to the radiation scheme and tested against measurements from ground-based remote sensors.

Qualified candidates must have a PhD, received within the past five years, in atmospheric or oceanic sciences, or a closely related field.

To apply, submit your one-page statement of interest and related experience, curriculum vitae, PhD abstact, and three references here.
