In support of the AmeriFlux network’s “Year of Water Fluxes,” the AmeriFlux community will hold a land-atmosphere interactions workshop on June 10 and 11, 2021. This workshop is in collaboration with representatives from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility and Atmospheric System Research (ASR).
The workshop, “Improving understanding of land-atmosphere interactions through integration of surface flux and atmospheric boundary-layer measurements,” will be held virtually. Registration is free and open to researchers around the world.
In addition to overview talks from global leaders that will highlight new and emerging research opportunities, the workshop will include breakout discussions and a poster session.
Registration forms, poster abstracts, and posters must be submitted by May 25.
The AmeriFlux “Year of Water Fluxes” is based on the community’s desire to support more water cycle measurements, enhance data quality, and build strong collaborations to work on the various aspects of water and fluxes. The workshop will address the following questions:
- What are the high-priority research questions that can be addressed with existing measurements (e.g., data from AmeriFlux sites with co-located instrumentation for boundary-layer measurements, or nearby radiosonde/profile measurements)?
- What new boundary-layer measurements should be prioritized, and where? What are the cutting-edge research questions that could be addressed with these new measurements?
- What is needed to increase interdisciplinary collaboration between ecologists/biogeoscientists and atmospheric scientists? How can we best share tools that are necessary to process, analyze, and interpret boundary-layer measurements?
- How can this kind of collaboration improve predictive understanding of biosphere-atmosphere interactions and land-atmosphere coupling?

Talks and breakout discussions will be on Zoom, and the poster session will take place on the Gather videoconferencing platform. Early career scientists are especially encouraged to submit a poster.
