Postgraduate students from earth and environmental sciences will have an opportunity this summer to explore earth system processes in the Azores archipelago west of Portugal. Members of the Aerosol and Cloud Experiments in the Eastern North Atlantic (ACE-ENA) field campaign, which starts in June, will contribute to the lesson plan.
ACE-ENA principal investigator Jian Wang and forecasting team members David Mechem, Scott Giangrande, and Xiquan Dong will help lead the ENA Workshop/Summer Course on Earth System Processes in the Atlantic. The workshop/summer course will take place July 2 to 7, 2017, at Academia de Juventude e das Artes da Ilha Terceira (Academy of Youth and Arts of Terceira Island) in Praia da Vitória.
The ACE-ENA team members will lead the following portions (schedule subject to change):
- Wang: Aerosol Processes and Overview of ACE-ENA Campaign (July 3)
- Mechem: Marine Boundary Layer (MBL) Clouds, Climatic Importance, Dynamics, Life Cycle (July 3)
- Giangrande: ARM Radar Operations and Science at ENA, ARM Facilities (July 4)
- Dong: MBL Cloud and Aerosol Interactions, General Aircraft Measurements (July 7)
Other lecturers will come from the University of Azores, University of Lisbon, Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere, Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science, Duke University, Stevens Institute of Technology, Rutgers University, Michigan Technological University, and the Oceanic Observatory of Madeira.
Students don’t have to pay a registration fee, but they must cover travel and accommodations.
Applications are due by June 1 to rfserpa12@gmail.com. Be sure to include a motivation letter of about 200 words and (optionally) the title of a 10-minute presentation to give during the course.
