cpol > C-band polarimetric (CPOL) grid level 1b dataData Source Type(s) > PI

CPOL records full-volume scans of the dynamical and microphysical properties of precipitating systems every 10 minutes, within 150 km of Darwin, Australia. The CPOL data contains gridded data that was created from the original radar data by using the Python ARM Radar Toolkit (Py-ART). The work to create this data has been supported by the U.S. Department of Energy Atmospheric Systems Research Program. CPOL recorded observations for 17 years from 1998 to 2017, excluding late 2007 to mid-2009.

Purpose

The purpose of this data is to collect dynamical and microphysical properties of convection in Darwin, Australia. This data can be used to improve earth system model representations of the convection formed during the pre-monsoon buildup and active monsoon.

Positional accuracy No formal positional accuracy tests were conducted.
Data Consistency and Completeness Dealiasing and phase processing were used to improve the quality of the velocity and dual polarization variables. Regions with clutter and second trip echoes were removed. Reflectivity was calibrated against GPM, which resulted in the addition of a 3.0 dB offset of the reflectivity values.

File naming convention The naming convention for the grid files goes in the order of: radar type, datetime, grid_resolution, file extension. Ex: CPOL_20011122_1110_GRIDS_1000m.nc
Directory Organization In the GRIDDED directory there are two subdirectories. The subdirectories are GRID_150km_2500m and GRID_70km_1000m. In each of this subdirectories, there are year directories and within the year directories are specific dates directories.
